No luck with the new motor

I picked up the new to me, but old, 1HP Baldor motor this weekend from a guy for $25. Got it home, wired a new cord and inline switch and tried to fire it up. The breaker in my power strip popped after about 5 seconds. Got some advice online and tried it plugged right intot he wall outlet with nothing but a light on in the garage....this time the breaker in the house popped after about 1 minute of the motor running. I need to figure this motor out, or get a new one because it has been just over a week since I've turned and that is not good for anyone.
